I get countless solicitations from folks asking me what my hair routine is, what products I use and what I do to keep my hair looking healthy. In the past I have replied one off, but the volume has grown much larger as of late that I am posting this open letter (Jay-Z style) to all those who aspire to know and I have creatively titled it “Open Letter to Those Who Want To Know Coco's Beauty Routine.”
My mother has great hair and so I'm naturally someone that has been blessed with thick Rapunzel locks, but I also definitely strive to take care of it. I'm mixed- Half-Asian and I also have a lot of Native American blood, so I'm fortunate enough to have really thick hair that keeps curls really well. Those of you that know me, know that I am super loyal to brands that I love. That said, I, like other girls that are totally into their hair, happen to use a lot of products. It's healthy for your hair to switch products and not always use the same thing. I happen to be on a rotation with Shampoo's and Conditioner's so that my hair can properly breathe. I also color my hair so my products need to protect, hydrate and repair. Sacha Juan is a Swedish brand that I am positively obsessed with. Their products are incredible and work like a dream. They aren't known in the USA and are carried at only a few salons in NYC + a few trendy e-commerce shops like The Line, but they are about to blow up and I have much respect for their products.
A few of my friends have problems with their hair thinning out from stress. The best recourse that I've seen has been to use repair products such as: high intensity protein treatments and deep conditioners. I use Moroccan Oil's Restorative Hair Mask and Schwarzkopf Bonacure Repair Sealed Ends and have recommended it to a few of my friends and they have had some good results. In general, when your hair is falling out, suffering from damage and feels very stiff- do not apply any type of heat. You'll only make it worse. In high school, I went through a traumatic hair change from going from super long and blonde hair (with perfect roots) to short and black (my guy messed up and made me look like Mia from Pulp Fiction). I was determined to get my hair to grow as fast as possible. I changed the color from black to a more purple-ish red (it looked a lot better than it sounds) and used hot rollers to curl my hair and deep conditioning treatments every week. Within about a year, I had great hair again. I still tend to do a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to make sure my hair stays in prime condition. I also always carry my Mason Pearson Comb with me in my bag. You never know when you are going to need it.
I never add oil to the roots of my hair or the front strands; if I want to moisturize them, it wont hurt to quickly go through with your fingers but I usually keep the oil for the body of my hair and keep the leave in conditioners for the top. I also don't blow dry my hair a lot, which is why I didn't list my blow dryer on my list below, but I use a Chi Turbo when I do blow outs. I generally try and wash my hair at night and sleep on it wet so that it air drys. I also curl my hair in large chunks so that it doesn't apply that much heat per hair strand and I always, always get trimmed up at least 1" ever six weeks.
